OFW Car Loan Guide: Apply From Abroad (2026)
By Richard Cuagdan, Mitsubishi Sales Executive ·
Quick answer: An OFW car loan is possible from abroad. Yes, OFWs can apply for a car loan while abroad. Banks commonly ask for a passport, employment or crew contract, recent payslips and proof of remittance, and may require a special power of attorney (SPA) or a co-borrower in the Philippines who can sign and receive the car for you.
Para sa lahat ng OFW na nagsasakripisyo abroad: you don't have to wait until you're home to start your car plan. Many of my clients apply from abroad and their family receives the car here. Here's how it works.

Can OFWs apply while abroad?
Yes. Many Philippine banks accept applications from Filipinos working abroad. Since you can't be here to sign, banks usually ask for one of these:
- Special power of attorney (SPA): authorizes a trusted family member to sign and transact for you. SPAs signed abroad are usually notarized or authenticated through the Philippine embassy or consulate, depending on the bank's requirements.
- Co-borrower: a family member in the Philippines who applies with you and shares responsibility for the loan.

Required documents
Exact lists vary by bank, but OFW applications commonly include:
- Passport and valid IDs
- Employment contract (or crew contract for seafarers)
- Latest payslips or a certificate of employment with income
- Proof of remittance for the past several months
- Proof of billing for your Philippine address
- SPA and IDs of your attorney-in-fact, or co-borrower documents
Some banks ask for a consularized certificate of employment, and seafarers may need crewing details. Full list here: car loan requirements.

Release and registration when you're not in the PH

The bank evaluates your documents and approves the loan.
Signing
Your attorney-in-fact or co-borrower signs the loan and release documents here.
Registration
For brand-new cars, the dealer processes the LTO registration. Since February 15, 2026, brand-new dealer-registered vehicles get a five-year initial registration. See LTO rules 2026.
Release
Your family receives the car at the showroom, and I walk them through the unit.

Choosing a family car for when you're away
When you're not around, you want your family in something safe, roomy and easy to maintain. Think about:
- Space: kids, lolo and lola, and grocery runs. A 7-seater like the Xpander or Destinator gives room to grow.
- Ground clearance: helpful during the rainy season and on provincial roads.
- Who will drive: choose a transmission your family is comfortable with.
- Service access: a dealer near home makes PMS easy for your family.
