How Much Car Can I Afford Based on Salary? (30–35% Rule)

Quick answer: How much car can I afford? Here's the simple rule. A safe guide is to keep your car amortization at about 30 to 35 percent of your gross monthly income. Divide the monthly by 0.35 for the minimum income and by 0.30 for a comfortable one. For example, the Xpander GLX MT at ₱22,401 a month (₱18K DP, October 2026 promo) fits a gross income of roughly ₱64,000 to ₱74,700.

"Kaya ko ba talaga?" is the most important question before buying a car, and the most skipped. The easy way to answer it is a simple rule I use with every client: keep your monthly amortization at about 30 to 35 percent of your gross monthly income.

That leaves the rest of your income for the things that don't stop when you buy a car: bills, food, tuition, savings, and the car's own running costs like fuel, PMS and insurance renewal.

The 30 to 35 percent income guide: monthly divided by 0.35 for minimum income, by 0.30 for comfortable income

The rule in one line

Work backwards from the monthly:

  • Minimum income = monthly amortization ÷ 0.35
  • Comfortable income = monthly amortization ÷ 0.30

If your gross income is at or above the comfortable figure, you have breathing room. If it's between the two, it can still work, but budget carefully. If it's below the minimum, look at a bigger down payment, a co-borrower, or a different unit.

How a down payment changes the picture

Every unit also has a low DP option. Paying more upfront lowers the monthly, and so lowers the income you need. A few examples from this month's promos:

Three ways to make a unit fit

  1. Add a co-borrower

Many banks allow a spouse or immediate family member as co-borrower, so combined income is considered.

  2. Put down a bigger DP

A low DP option lowers the monthly. Even part of your 13th month can help; see my 13th month car budget plan.

  3. Choose the right variant

The difference between variants can be a few thousand pesos a month. A manual GLX may fit where an automatic GLS doesn't.

Don't forget the costs after the monthly

The 30–35% rule covers the amortization only. Set aside a separate monthly budget for fuel, parking, tolls, PMS and the comprehensive insurance renewal after the locked period. The all-in package covers a lot at the start: LTO registration, TPL insurance, 1-year comprehensive insurance with the rate locked for 3 years, chattel mortgage, free labor up to 5,000 km and a 3-year warranty. Here's what all-in covers.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of my income should go to a car loan?

As a guide, keep the monthly amortization at about 30 to 35 percent of your gross monthly income, so there's still room for fuel, insurance, savings and family needs. Banks make the final assessment.

Can I combine my income with my spouse's?

Many banks allow a co-borrower, often a spouse, so combined income can be considered. Requirements depend on the bank.

Does a bigger down payment lower the income I need?

Yes. A bigger down payment lowers the monthly, so the income needed goes down too. Compare Option A (lowest DP) and Option B (30% DP) of the same unit.

Is the 30–35% rule the bank's official rule?

No. It's a planning guide I use with clients. Each bank has its own credit evaluation, and approval is always subject to bank approval.
