Car Aircon Not Cooling? Care Tips to Keep It Cold

By Richard Cuagdan, Mitsubishi Sales Executive ·

Mitsubishi Xpander with a cool cabin for the family

Quick answer: Car aircon not cooling as it used to? Keep your car AC cold and fresh by replacing the cabin filter at PMS, parking in the shade, using recirculation once the cabin cools, running the fan a few minutes before switching off to dry the system, and having the AC checked if it's weak, noisy or smelly.

Sa init ng Pilipinas, ang aircon ay hindi luho, kailangan. Here's how to keep yours cold and fresh, especially in the El Niño heat.

Car aircon not cooling: clogged cabin filter, moisture, dusty condenser, low refrigerant

Why AC gets weak or smelly

  • A dirty or clogged cabin filter blocks airflow and traps odors
  • Moisture in the system can lead to a musty smell
  • A dusty condenser at the front of the car cools less efficiently
  • Low refrigerant or a worn part, which needs a technician

Daily habits that help

  1. Park in the shade

Or use a sunshade. A cooler cabin means less work for the AC.

  2. Vent first

Open the windows for a minute when the car is very hot, then close them and turn on the AC.

  3. Use recirculation smartly

Once cool, recirculate; switch to fresh air now and then.

  4. Dry the system

Before you arrive, turn off the AC compressor and let the fan run a few minutes to reduce moisture.

Maintenance

  • Have the cabin filter checked and replaced at PMS as recommended
  • Ask for an AC cleaning if odor persists
  • Keep the cabin clean; food crumbs and wet mats add odor

Warning signs to have checked

  • Air not cold, or only cold while moving
  • Unusual noise when the AC turns on
  • Water dripping inside the cabin
  • Persistent bad smell after a filter change

Families who ride in the third row should check rear AC reach on a test drive. See my Xpander vs Destinator comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my car aircon smell?

Moisture and dirt in the system and a clogged cabin filter can cause musty odors. Have the filter replaced and the system cleaned if needed.

Why is my AC not as cold as before?

A clogged filter, a dirty condenser, low refrigerant or a component issue. Have it checked at a service center.

Should I use recirculation mode?

Once the cabin has cooled, recirculation helps keep it cool and blocks outside fumes. Switch to fresh air occasionally to avoid stuffiness and fogging.

Does using the AC use more fuel?

It adds some engine load. Parking in shade and keeping the system clean help it work less.
