Tire Care Tips: Tire Pressure, Tread and Rotation

Quick answer: Tire care tips, in short. Check tire pressure at least monthly when the tires are cold, using the pressure on the driver's door jamb. Check tread depth and look for cracks, bulges and uneven wear. Rotate tires as your owner's manual recommends, usually during PMS, and replace tires that are worn, damaged or aged.

Your tires are the only part of the car that touches the road, four palm-sized patches holding your family's safety. A few minutes a month keeps them doing their job.

Tire care tips: check pressure, tread, damage, rotation and tire age

1. Pressure: check monthly, when cold

  • Use the pressure on the driver's door jamb sticker or the owner's manual
  • Check when cold: morning, before driving far
  • Don't forget the spare
  • Under-inflation wastes fuel and wears the edges; over-inflation wears the center and reduces grip

2. Tread: grip in the rain

Tread channels water away so the tire can grip. Worn tread is a big cause of hydroplaning. Look for the tread wear indicators in the grooves. When the tread is level with them, replace the tire.

3. Look for damage

  • Bulges or bubbles on the sidewall: replace, don't drive far
  • Cracks in the rubber, often from heat and age
  • Nails, screws or cuts
  • Uneven wear: may mean alignment or pressure problems

4. Rotate and align

Rotating tires helps them wear evenly. Follow the interval in your owner's manual; it's commonly done during PMS. If the car pulls to one side or the steering wheel is off-center, have the alignment checked.

5. When to replace

  • Tread at the wear indicators
  • Sidewall bulges, deep cuts or cracks
  • Older tires, even with tread left: check the date code on the sidewall
  • Replace in pairs or sets as recommended, with the size listed for your car

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the right tire pressure?

On the sticker on the driver's door jamb and in your owner's manual. Don't use the maximum number printed on the tire sidewall.

When should I check tire pressure?

At least once a month and before long trips, when the tires are cold, such as in the morning before driving.

How do I know if my tires are worn out?

Most tires have tread wear indicators, small raised bars in the grooves. If the tread is level with them, it's time to replace.

Do tires expire even if they have tread?

Rubber ages over time, especially in heat. Check the manufacturing date on the sidewall and have older tires inspected.
