SJDM to Manila Commute: Daily Driving Tips
By Richard Cuagdan, Mitsubishi Sales Executive ·
Quick answer: Driving SJDM to Manila every day? In short: For the daily SJDM to Metro Manila drive, leave before the peak, pick your main route (Quirino Highway toward Fairview and Commonwealth, or via NLEX) and keep a backup, check MMDA number coding for your plate, keep RFID loaded, and choose an automatic if you face stop-and-go traffic every day.
Taga-SJDM ka pero sa Maynila ang trabaho? You're one of many. The commute can be long, but a few habits make it more predictable, and a lot less stressful.

Know your routes, and a backup
Most SJDM drivers head down Quirino Highway toward Fairview and Commonwealth, or take NLEX depending on where in Metro Manila they work. Know both, because a single accident or road work can change everything.
- Check a live traffic app before leaving and before major junctions
- Save your main and backup routes in your navigation app
- Watch for advisories on road works and rerouting from your LGU and the toll operator

Timing is everything
- Leaving even 15 to 30 minutes earlier can make a big difference before the peak
- School days and paydays are usually heavier
- Rainy days slow everyone down: leave earlier
- If your work allows, shift your hours away from the peak

Number coding and RFID
MMDA's number coding (UVVRP) applies on covered Metro Manila roads based on your plate's last digit, wherever your car is registered. Check the MMDA's current scheme, hours and exemptions, since they can change.
If you use NLEX or the skyways, keep your RFID loaded and the sticker in good condition. A failed read at the toll gate costs you time every single day.
Make the car part of the solution
- Automatic or CVT: much easier in daily stop-and-go
- Fuel economy habits: see my fuel-saving tips
- Carpooling: a 7-seater can share costs with officemates or bring the kids to school on the way
- Comfort: good AC, a comfortable seat and phone charging make long drives easier
For carpools and school runs, the Xpander GLX AT is a popular choice: an automatic 7-seater at ₱1,159,000 SRP, from ₱23,592 a month at ₱23K DP, with 60K fuel (October 2026 promo, 60 months).

Stay fresh on long drives
- Sleep well. Puyat driving is dangerous driving
- Keep water and a light snack in the car
- Use podcasts or music, not your phone screen
- Keep up with PMS so the car never adds to your stress. See my PMS schedule guide

Frequently asked questions
What's the best time to leave SJDM for Manila?
As early as you can before the morning peak. Traffic changes with school days, road works and weather, so check a live traffic app before leaving.
Does number coding apply if I'm from Bulacan?
MMDA's number coding applies to vehicles on covered Metro Manila roads, regardless of where the car is registered. Check MMDA's current scheme and exemptions.
Manual or automatic for the daily commute?
Automatic or CVT is much less tiring in stop-and-go traffic. If your budget prefers a manual, practice smooth clutch work and take breaks.
How do I cut fuel costs on a long commute?
Correct tire pressure, smooth driving, less idling, and keeping up with PMS. See my fuel-saving tips.
