El Niño and Typhoon Car Care Tips (2026)

Quick answer: Car care tips for both heat and storms. PAGASA expects a very strong El Niño through late 2026, so protect your battery, coolant, tires and AC from the heat. But 1 to 2 tropical cyclones are still expected each month from October to December, so stay flood-ready: don't drive through deep water, and don't restart an engine that was submerged.

Mainit ngayon, pero may bagyo pa rin? Yes. PAGASA says a strong to very strong El Niño is ongoing and may peak before the end of 2026, bringing below-normal rainfall and hotter-than-usual temperatures to many areas. But PAGASA also expects 1 to 2 tropical cyclones each month from October to December, and they could reach typhoon strength. Your car needs to be ready for both.

Heat care: what the init does to your car

  • Battery: heat speeds up battery wear. Have it tested at PMS, and replace it if it's weak.
  • Coolant: keep it at the right level, with the correct type. Watch your temperature gauge in traffic.
  • Tires: tire pressure rises when tires are hot. Check pressure in the morning when they're cold.
  • AC: have it cleaned and checked. Park in the shade or use a sunshade to reduce heat build-up.
  • Paint and interior: wash off dust and bird droppings promptly, and use a sunshade to protect the dashboard.

Flood rules when the bagyo comes

  1. Don't guess the depth

If the water looks like it's around half your tire height or more, turn back.

  2. Never cross moving water

Even shallow, fast-moving water can push a car.

  3. Go slow and steady

If you must pass through shallow water, use low gear and avoid creating a wave.

  4. Don't restart a stalled car in water

Restarting can let water into the engine and cause serious damage.

  5. Test your brakes after

Lightly press the brakes a few times after leaving water to dry them.

Higher ground clearance helps on flooded streets. The Destinator has 214 mm of ground clearance, but no car is a boat. Safety first pa rin.

After-flood checklist

  • If water reached the floor or engine bay, don't start the car. Have it towed.
  • Take photos for your insurance claim.
  • Have the service center check the engine, transmission fluid, brakes and electricals.
  • Dry the interior to prevent mold and odor.

Bagyo-season emergency kit

  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Powerbank and charger
  • Drinking water and snacks
  • Raincoat and payong
  • First-aid kit
  • Early warning device and tow strap

Insurance: acts of nature

Comprehensive insurance doesn't always cover flood or typhoon damage by default. Acts of nature (AON) coverage is often an add-on, so read your policy or ask your insurer exactly what is covered.

Frequently asked questions

Is there El Niño or La Niña in late 2026?

El Niño. PAGASA says a strong to very strong El Niño is present and is expected to last until the first half of 2027.

Can there still be typhoons during El Niño?

Yes. PAGASA expects 1 to 2 tropical cyclones each in October, November and December 2026, and says these may be strong.

How deep is too deep to drive through flood?

As a rule of thumb, don't push through water that reaches about half the height of your tires, and never cross moving water. If you're unsure of the depth, don't go.

What should I do if my car was submerged?

Don't try to start it. Have it towed to a service center for inspection, and contact your insurer.
